Benefits & Opportunities

The Honors College at The University of Alabama offers undergraduate students in one of the eight degree-granting colleges opportunities to choose one or several honors experiences.

University-wide Honors Programs benefit students from all colleges by providing small classes of honors students taught by excellent faculty (no graduate assistants). Along with this outstanding academic experience, honors program students also receive registration priority, counseling and mentoring as they pursue prestige scholarships and awards, and eligibility both for first-rate honors housing and also for membership in the Honors Programs Student Association. The three University-wide Honors Programs are: the University Honors Program, the Computer-Based Honors Program, and the International Honors Program.

There are also College and Departmental Honors Programs at the University of Alabama. These programs offer enhanced courses of study for advanced students in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, for majors in all the departments in the College of Engineering (name the departments), and in several fields within the College of Arts and Sciences (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, English, Philosophy, and Psychology). Credits earned in a college or department honors program count toward the 18-hour University Honors Program requirement, and a UHP member who completes an honors thesis either in UH or in a discipline will have the notation “University Honors Program, With Thesis” inscribed on diploma and transcript.

Members of all three university-wide honors programs are on the Honors College listserve and will be apprised first of opportunities for institutional, national, and international scholarships, awards, and internships.  They will also learn quickly of many academic and social opportunities, both those available only to honors program students and those for the general university population.
