Dear Honors College Community,

On August 5, The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to rename the building where the Honors College resides from Nott Hall to Honors Hall. As Dean of the Honors College, I appreciate the swift and decisive actions of the Board of Trustees to remove a name that did not represent our College’s values or our mission to create a diverse community of critical and creative thinkers, ethical and empathetic citizens, and collaborative and inclusive leaders.

In presenting the resolution, Trustee Judge John England, Jr. described our building as a place “where students, faculty, and staff pursue excellence to benefit the system, state, and nation” and “demonstrate the University’s commitment to diversity, fairness, equity, and inclusion.”

It is now our responsibility to live up to that characterization.

As we move ahead into the new academic year and the future of the Honors College, the faculty, staff, and leadership will be reaching out to students with opportunities for conversations, forums, and community engagement. We encourage you to participate and to continue to be voices and agents for positive change.

I look forward to welcoming you to Honors Hall this fall!

Tara Williams
