School Placement: Matthews Elementary

This class has a Social and Behavioral (SB) designation.

Honors Mentoring provides the dedicated student with the intellectual opportunity to acquire the content knowledge and refine interpersonal skills necessary to effectively mentor elementary, middle or high school students. It challenges students to look beyond their own perspectives, assumptions and experiences and embrace the interconnectedness of our society.

Through the study of social structures and economic issues, the student will explore factors that affect behavior/identity and the idea that behavior/identity shapes and is shaped by the social environment.  Students in the course will be exposed to dynamics of behavior/identity development with targeted contexts within a focus on education. The course requires elements of service learning to be embedded in the curriculum.

This course has a required service learning component conducted through Educational Outreach’s Engage Tuscaloosa office. The service learning experience is a learning vehicle for the Honors students to be exposed to and learn about educational issues within multiple segments of the population.  UA students will work with pupils in local elementary, middle or high schools for 10-15 hours during the semester in a variety of educational settings and subject areas. Honors students will receive training during class time on the specific work to be done in the service learning experience, on how to work with school-aged children and how to be an effective mentor.
