This course will begin by examining the British decryption of the Zimmerman Telegram and subsequent disclosure to the Woodrow Wilson Administration–the seminal event in the U.S. government’s decision to become an active combatant in World War I. It will then explore in depth the Anglo-American intelligence sharing and joint-commando operations in World War II. Finally, it will examine the challenges posed to this intelligence relationship during the early decades of the Cold War–in particular, the discovery that British agentKim Philby, who had the trust of top U.S. intelligence officials, was, in fact, a Soviet agent.
