This course will chart the development of the topic of love within the tradition of political theory.  Love has a very long tradition in political theory, going back to Plato’s Symposium.  We will begin there, move through the works of famous thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Machiavelli, Leo Tolstoy, and Martin Luther King Jr., and end by exploring current writings in political theory that explore love in terms of race, class, gender, and democratic theory.
