This seminar focuses on eight plays with a thematic focus on erotic relationships. Specifically, we will explore how Shakespearean couples (along with their fellow citizens, friends, and family) negotiate the sometimes-rocky paths of courtship, marriage, and sexuality. Secondary readings will help us theorize and speculate about related themes of love, jealousy, skepticism, and privacy. Either a reading quiz or a brief writing exercise will be assigned for each class meeting. In the spirit of open dialogue, each class will structure itself according to basically Socratic methods. That means we will seek to help one another achieve better critical perspective on the views, beliefs, and hypotheses of characters, critics, and one another. As a student, you should prepare both to listen attentively and to speak intelligently each day, having read and studied the assigned material.
