Dr. Seuss once wrote, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” In this class students will explore the robust definitions and concepts of citizenship while engaging in academic service-learning activities. This course is designed to help students identify skills and utilize knowledge obtained through this class and apply the various constructs and skills from their experiences and academic disciplines to identified needs within their service-learning field experiences. These service-learning field experiences will be demonstrated through fair trade learning. Through these service-learning activities(30 hours)students will develop positive citizenship characteristics that will enable them to contribute to their own communities while progressing through the active citizenship continuum. Classes will meet Tuesday and on Thursday during class time students will participate in service learning with a literacy focus at the Benjamin Barnes YMCA in West End.
