TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Honors College, in partnership with the Department of English’s Creative Writing Program, has selected “Sing, Unburied, Sing” by Jesmyn Ward for its Common Book Experience in 2022/2023.

The Honors Common Book is chosen by a campus-wide committee composed of faculty and staff. All incoming freshmen in the Honors College are expected to read the Common Book, which is discussed in a variety of curricular and co-curricular settings.

“Reading Ward’s lyrical tale together will challenge our students to examine the past and present of the modern south as they join Jojo and his family on their epic journey that is Sing, Unburied, Sing,” said Dr. Anne Franklin Lamar, Director of Honors Year One.

Ward, an MFA graduate from the University of Michigan and current professor of creative writing at Tulane University, won the National Book Award for “Sing, Unburied, Sing” and her prior book “Salvage the Bones.” Ward will visit The University of Alabama’s campus October 10-11 for the public Common Book Lecture and smaller engagement opportunities with students.
