Each year The University of Alabama Honors College selects a book to be read and discussed by first-year students, faculty and mentors. Last year, the committee chose “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row” by Anthony Ray Hinton for its 2020 Common Book Experience.

After reading the Common Book, this spring semester’s Honors Year One students were required to research a root cause of injustice in our criminal justice system and write a policy proposal advocating for a change that would address that structural issue.

Honors freshman David Ware’s Common Book assignment was recently published in Capstone Commentary, the online platform for UA’s legal research journal.
