Phi Beta Kappa Inducts 80 UA Honors College Students

The Alpha of Alabama’s Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa has inducted 103 students, 80 of whom are Honors College students.  This is the highest academic honor an undergraduate can receive.

The inducted students will unite with a distinguished group of scholars, which include 17 U.S. Presidents, 42 U.S. Supreme Court Justices and more than 150 Nobel Laureates. Phi Beta Kappa has chapters at 293 colleges and universities in the United States, 50 alumni associations and more than half a million members worldwide.

“Earning membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a testament to these students’ dedication to intellectual exploration and academic excellence,” said Honors College Dean, Dr. Tiffany Sippial. “In a world filled with competing demands, they have embraced the breadth and depth of the liberal arts and sciences, demonstrating a commitment to critical thinking, ethical leadership and lifelong learning. Their achievement places them among an esteemed tradition of scholars, and we celebrate their hard work, curiosity and passion for knowledge.”

“I am incredibly proud of the commitment to the liberal arts and sciences that the new Phi Beta Kappa members have shown,” said Dr. Megan Snider Bailey, President of the Alpha of Alabama Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. “These students are the best and the brightest, and we know they have many, competing opportunities while here at UA. Their investment in learning for learning’s sake shows curiosity and dedication, and I am thrilled to welcome them into this prestigious society.”

This year, Phi Beta Kappa named the Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships Director Dr. Lucy Kaufman as an honorary member.

The Alpha of Alabama Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa recently marked 170 years since its initial chartering date at The University of Alabama.

The Honors College celebrates and congratulates all the selected Honors students on their accomplishments and dedication to excellence.
