Honors College Timeline

1968NSF funded Computer-Based Honors Program (CBHP) established and housed in Gordan Palmer Hall. Dr. Charles Seebeck named Director.
1970President David Matthews funded the continuation of the Computer-Based Honors Program.
1976Dr. Thomas Gatts named Computer-Based Honors Program Director.
1981Dr. Cathy Randall named Computer-Based Honors Program Director.
1984Jane Batson became the first female instructor in CBHP.
1987The University Honors Program (UHP) established under Dr. Jim Cobb in Farrah Hall.
1988UHP moved into dedicated space in Temple-Tutwiler Hall.
1988Darren Evans-Young named first African American instructor in CBHP.
1993Computer-Based Honors Program Research Lab established in Maxwell Hall.
1997The International Honors Program (IHP) founded. Dr. Fran Oneal named Director.
2001Alabama Action began as the brainchild of Honors student Kana Ellis. As president of the Honors Program Student Association (HPSA), Ellis saw a need to help introduce freshmen to the university before the beginning of the fall semester. She created Alabama Action to engage incoming Honors freshmen in a period of sustained, substantive volunteer work in an underprivileged area and provide them with an academic introduction to poverty issues. In August 2001, the first class of Alabama Action refurbished the Boys and Girls Club in Eutaw, Alabama and in August 2002, Alabama Action worked on the library at Holt Elementary School.
2001Vision for Honors at The University of Alabama – UHP committed to expanding the number of honors courses for juniors and seniors at the Capstone. A gift from the J. Reese Phifer, Jr. Foundation provided four $3,000 grants to faculty to develop and teach a new honors course at the 300 or 400 level.

2001Phifer Honors Computer Lab dedicated for members of UHP living in New Hall through a donation from the J. Reese Phifer, Jr. Foundation.
2002Kana Ellis, CBH and UHP student, was selected as the first recipient of the Honors Student of the Year Award by the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC).
2003Honors College was formally established by Dr. Robert Witt with Dr. Robert “Bob” Halli named Founding Dean.
2005The now renamed Honors Hall housed UHP, IHP and CBHP.
2005Dr. Shane Sharpe named CBHP Director.
2005Outdoor Action, an environmental service-learning experience based on the model of Alabama Action was established.
2005The Honors Academy was founded.
2005The Honors College Board of Visitors established.
2006The CBHP Research Lab was moved from Maxwell Hall to Honors Hall consolidating all facets of the Honors College under one roof.
2007Black Belt Action, a two-week service-learning experience in conjunction with the University of West Alabama Center for the Study of the Black Belt, begins.
2009Dr. Jacqueline Morgan named first Associate Dean.
2009The University Fellows Experience founded by Dean Bob Halli and Dr. Jacqueline Morgan.
2009First edition of MOSAIC Magazine created and developed by Honors College students published.
2010Dr. Shane Sharpe named Honors College Dean.
2010Dr. Brad Tuggle and Dr. Will Nolan named first tenure-track faculty members.
2010HPSA renamed Honor College Assembly (HCA).
2013Honors Year One (HYO) program established.
2015Honors College Common Book Experience established.
2016Health Action pilot year.
2017Honors Living Learning Community established in Ridgecrest West.
2018Computer-Based Honors 50th Anniversary Celebration and program renamed as the Randall Research Scholars Program through an endowment from the Pettus Randall III family.
2019Honors College established collaborative Partner Programs with the CREATE and STEM Path to the MBA Programs, Blount Undergraduate Initiative and McCollough Pre-Medical Scholars Program.
2020Dr. Tara Williams named Honors College Dean.
2020Dr. Tara Mock became the first African American full-time assistant professor.
2021The Engineering Positive and Intentional Change (EPIC) Scholars Program established as a Partner Program.
2021Dr. Cassander Smith became first African American to be named Associate Dean.
2022University Fellows Experience celebrated its 15th anniversary.
2022The BIG Ideas Contest, a student innovation contest for social impact, endowed and created by Honors College alumnus, James C. Kennemer.
2023The James C. Kennemer Center for Innovation and Social Impact established and named by Honors College alumnus, James C. Kennemer.
2023Dr. Tiffany Sippial named Honors College Dean.
2023The Honors College celebrated its 20th anniversary.
2024The UA Board of Trustees officially changed the name of the University Fellows Experience to the Dr. Robert E. Witt University Fellows Program.
2024The Honors College established the Achieve Scholars Program.
2024The Honors College established the Honors Transdisciplinary Pedagogy Course Design Fellowship.
