Honors Action is an exciting, week-long community engagement experience and course designed to provide Honors College freshmen with the opportunity to engage in meaningful community-based partnerships. Participants in the program arrive on campus before their peers and devote the last week of their summer to service projects in the Tuscaloosa area.
The 2020 program begins Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020 and concludes Friday, Aug. 14, 2020.
Participants will move into their residence halls prior to the beginning of Honors Action, as designated by the UA Office of Housing and Residential Communities.
Please note, there is a $225.00 course fee for Honors Action that is charged on student accounts when fall tuition and fees are billed. Students will register for UH 103 when they register for classes during Bama Bound in the summer.
What Will I Do?
The community engagement experience will take place at schools within Tuscaloosa County. At the schools, participants will complete a variety of service projects. Past projects have included painting, constructing benches and outdoor classrooms, and landscaping.
While each student will be assigned to a specific partnership and service project, all participants of Honors Action will engage in common programming with the entire group (i.e., daily lectures, small group discussion, meals, and evening activities). Students should read the Honors College Common Book 2020 before the week begins. Students will also enroll in a 1 credit hour, UH 103 course that corresponds to lectures, common book reading, group discussions, and journal reflections. This course is pass/fail.
