Honors College Instructor Wade Langer received a Tide Teaching Grant Award for his “Mythos to Logos” course.
“This grant allows me to qualitatively research how using a video game to teach theology impacts a student’s ability to objectively examine religious traditions through comparative study,” said Langer.
Once a week, the “Mythos to Logos” class will engage in what Langer calls a “Game Lab,” where students will play a video game in class under his guidance, with lectures interspersed to frame their gameplay.
According to Langer, the students in class, upon hearing the focus and idea behind the course, found the concept surprising. “They (the students) told me they saw this course and were curious how these two seemingly different topics – religion and in-class video gaming – would relate,” said Langer. “There is a heightened level of energy and engagement in the class every time we meet as a result.”
Langer will be producing research in spring 2025 based on his findings during the 2024 fall semester. He expressed his excitement for the journey ahead.
“I think it’s going to be great semester,” Langer said.
