Dr. Lucy Kaufman, Assistant Professor of Early Modern British History, will serve as The University of Alabama’s new director of the Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships (OESF). Kaufman served as the campus representative for the Marshall Scholarship last year and has a much longer history of working with external awards on our campus, with a special focus on UK awards. She will also be serving on the National Fulbright Screening Committee starting this fall.

“I’m delighted to be leading the Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships. I believe deeply in the awards process, which fires students’ ambitions and challenges them to take intellectual risks: to dream big and to turn those dreams into reality,” said Kaufman. “Working with students through the OESF is one of the great joys of my career.”

Kaufman is a prolific scholar and award-winning teacher. Her new book, A People’s Reformation: Building the English Church in the Elizabethan Parish, just came out and she has also published numerous articles in her field with prestigious presses like Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. She was just named a Fellow of the Royal History Society and is the incoming Vice President of the Southern Conference of British Studies. For her excellence in the classroom, Dr. Kaufman just received the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award and she also serves on the Core Curriculum Implementation Committee.

Honors College Dean Tiffany Sippial stated, “I could not be more thrilled to have Dr. Kaufman at the head of UA’s Office of External Scholarships and Fellowships. She has a proven track record for guiding students on our campus through these application processes. Her vision for that office and for student success is going to be a game changer for this university.”

The OESF is housed in Honors Hall and serves all UA students.
