The University of Alabama Honors College is excited to name Yonathan Janka as Student of the Month November 2023. Janka is from Kingsport, Tennessee and is majoring in microbiology while being a part of the Accelerated Master’s Program pursuing an M.S. in biology with a concentration in neurobiology.

Janka earned exceptional accolades such as being a Yale School of Medicine Program to Advance Training in Health & Science (PATHS) Scholar and a Harvard Medical School/MIT Equitable Access to Research Training (HEART) Scholar. With over 200 hours of shadowing physicians, Janka works hard to achieve his goals. Janka wrote on how being in the University Honors Program has helped him work toward his goals.

“I am blessed for the unwavering support I receive to pursue multidisciplinary initiatives,” Janka wrote. “The Honors College has immensely increased my trajectory toward achieving my goals and career aspirations. Exposure to unparalleled on-campus and national scholarly opportunities has allowed me to grow and thrive beyond my imagination.”

Janka is extremely involved on campus. He served as President of the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS) and a Research Ambassador for The University of Alabama’s Office for Undergraduate Research. Janka is a member of 10 different campus organizations and a BRIDGE Engagement and Academic Mentors Program Manager. These are just a few of the ways he uses his skills and stays engaged on campus. Janka, a recipient of more than 10 honors and awards, expressed his thoughts on how the Honors College cares about its students.

“Ultimately, the Honors College cherishes its students,” Janka wrote, “and it’s evident in the corroborative, uplifting community they have cultivated. Regardless of what my future has in store, the Honors experience has been fundamental in enhancing my experience at The University of Alabama.”

We at the Honors College are cheering Janka on.
