Paine is, arguably, (at least I argue it) the person most responsible for making Americans Americans. And making modern democracy genuinely democratic. Paine is a fascinating character, full of contradiction and ego, humanity and courage, highs and lows. He was one of the most radical and outspoken thinkers of the eighteenth century and that century’s best selling writer. He was one of the world’s great revolutionary idealists.
