Honors College Announces 2020/2021 Common Book

The University of Alabama Honors College has selected The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by
Anthony Ray Hinton for its Common Book Experience in 2020/2021. The Honors Common Book is selected by a campus-wide committee composed of faculty and staff. It is read by all new freshmen in the Honors College, and it is discussed by freshmen, faculty, and upperclass mentors, within and outside of the classroom.

Six Honors Students Win Fulbright Awards

Six University of Alabama Honors College alumna have won Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Awards for the 2020–2021 academic year. The Fulbright Program is the most prestigious U.S. international exchange program, offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals. The Fulbright Award of the U.S. Department of State offers one-year grants for independent study and research, and for English teaching assistantships overseas.

Four Honors College Students Earn Prestigious Scholarships

Four Randall Research Scholars Program students have earned prestigious scholarships. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program has selected Hannah Slater as a Goldwater Scholar for 2020-2021. Elizabeth Batts, Max Hawkins and Nicholas Hayes will receive the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for 2020-2022.

Growing up in a southern city, she had seen the effects of social injustice for much of her life. Going to school in a different part of the country would allow her to escape that culture, she believed.

Leader within Oregon State’s Honors College Named UA Dean

An English professor and associate dean who oversees the honors curriculum at Oregon State University has been named dean of The University of Alabama’s Honors College. Dr. Tara Williams’ appointment as dean is effective March 1, said Dr. Kevin Whitaker, UA executive vice president and provost.
